So if you go to the "bar," it may seem eccentric - where we were (we called for a reservation), there were five or six tables. Two details that are important: There is a bar a half-block away, which provides the food and wine - the waiters walk it over, and we sat at the northeast corner of the Plaza Candelaria in outside tables, and that was a fine venue. We ordered five or six appetizers, and a couple of main dishes: Deep fried avocado with shrimp, superb croquetas with jamón and just a faint touch of mint (hierbabuena), scallops (zambrano), a bento Levante (with various ingredients: ceviche, scallops, goat cheese, pulpo), eggplant (beregena) on a nice green sauce (perhaps hummus?) that we were encouraged to mash together and spread on toast: delicious, arroz negro (black rice) which was interesting if not a world-beater, and a fine red wine that I've never seen elsewhere - Assemblage (2019), which was robust at first, yet mellowed by the time the first food arrived.Īll in all, a truly nice dinner among friends. Even in Cádiz it was a warm evening in late April, and none of us needed a jacket or long-sleeved shirt going without was fine. My sister was returning by train from a long (HOT!) day in Sevilla, and despite train delays, managed to join us a little after 9:30 pm at La Candela, with a long-time friend of ours, now resident in Cádiz, who suggested this as a destination. La Candela performed well, and the outside conditions made for a relaxing evening. The entire damage was €38,60 which, in the grand scheme of things, seemed perfectly fair. So we ordered roasted vegetables (parrillada de verduras) which included palm hearts, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, and broccoli with a pesto sauce. My wife’s carrilleras de cerdo (pork cheeks) were tender and yummy, albeit lukewarm (on purpose?), but both of us needed our greens. Such a delicate mixture, beautifully laid out, and generous in portion. The server quickly brought me a beer, then a plate of the best octopus (pulpo) that I’ve ever eaten. After we struggled to read the cryptic menu in microprint, we managed to place our orders. Fortunately we got there early enough to. We made a reservation and ate outside adjacent to Plaza Candelaria instead of the eclectic yet noisy interior setting. La Candela actually lived up to expectations, something Cherry Wonderdog has trouble saying for many other restaurants in Andalucia.
